It’s hard to believe that one year ago today we opened the 2019 Theatre Ontario Festival. A great time to socialize, discuss and enjoy wonderful live theatre. What a different world we are in today. Although the battle against COVID-19 continues, there are glimmers of hope that the world is starting to get back to normal. Or a new normal. At the Curtain Club we continue to make decisions based on the safety of our members and our patrons. Given the ever-changing nature of this virus, we have had to modify our original plans. We had planned to postpone the last two plays of this season to the fall. However, we now must acknowledge, that may not be possible. What we do know is that our next season will be different and it will include the two plays that most of you have already paid for, Tempting Providence and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. We plan to release our subscription information for the 2020-2021 season over the summer. Only time will give us the necessary perspective to make decisions that are safe and practical, and we will ensure that you are informed on the revised dates for your tickets as soon as possible. You may have heard that some theatres are struggling financially or have permanently closed. The Curtain Club has a long-standing practise of maintaining financial reserves to protect us in the event of an emergency situation. Although we did not foresee a pandemic bringing our country and our theatre to a virtual standstill, rest assured that we are in a good financial position to weather this storm. We are continuing operations as best we can. We are using online tools for board meetings and last night we had our first online General Meeting. We are planning our AGM in June and it too will be online. We do have some good news to share. Every year the Curtain Club enters some of our productions into the Association of Community Theatres – Central Ontario Festival. This year we entered The Patron Saint of Stanley Park, Burn and Tempting Providence. At the online awards gala, we received 18 nominations and 8 awards – very strong results. All three productions were recognized and we are proud to announce that Tempting Providence took home the big prize of Best Overall Production of a Drama! This show has not yet opened but we were fortunate to have a dress rehearsal adjudicated. You now have something very special to look forward to when we reopen with this award-winning production. A complete list of our nominations and awards are below. We encourage you to share this information with friends who may not have email or web access. The Box Office will remain open during the postponement period to assist you.
