Director Selection for the 2017 – 2018 Season
The Curtain Club is thrilled to announce there next Season for 2017/18. The plays chosen are:
Slot 1 – September 2017
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up, but their peace is disturbed when their movie star sister Masha returns unannounced with her twentysomething boy toy, Spike. This witty, heartfelt look at sibling rivalry and family values in a fast-changing world will rock the house with laughter.
Slot 2 – November 2017
Parfumerie
This gentle romantic comedy takes us to Hammerschmidt’s Parfumerie on a busy street in Budapest, just before Christmas in 1937. While customers clamour to finish their Christmas shopping, the owner and his staff deal with secrets, rivalries, mistaken identities, and romantic entanglements. Only the truth can lead to a happy resolution in this vintage tale of friendship and love.
Slot 3 – February 2018
The Game’s Afoot; or Holmes for the Holidays
It is December 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. When one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. It’s up to Gillette to assume the persona of his beloved Holmes and track down the killer before the next victim appears. The suspense and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit!
Slot 4 – April 2018
Butcher
An old man in a military uniform and a Santa hat is dumped at the police station. He doesn’t speak English, and a lawyer’s business card is baited on the meat hook that hangs on his neck. As a lawyer, a police officer, and a translator struggle to unravel the truth, they uncover a past that won’t stay buried, and a decades-old quest for justice that must be served.
Slot 5 – June 2018
Calendar Girls
This captivating comedy is a celebration of life, friendship and love. Based on a true story, Calendar Girls takes us on a journey with a group of Women’s Institute members who posed nude for an “alternative” fund-raising calendar. When Annie’s husband dies of leukaemia, she and best friend Chris set out to buy a memorial settee for the local hospital’s waiting room, and convince fellow WI members to help out. Their plans raise eyebrows as well as funds! The calendar is wildly successful, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.
We are now looking for Directors. If you’re interested in Directing you will be asked to make a presentation to the Director Selection Committee.
Presentations will be scheduled for the evening of February 15th, 2017 and will be held at the Theatre.
You will want to include the following topics in your presentation:
1. Why do you want to direct this play?
2. What challenges does this play offer you as a director?
3. What challenges will the production present to the club and its members?
4. What insights or vision do you bring that will make you a good director for this play?
5. If you wish to participate in the ACTCO festival or not. (This is not a deciding factor. We do not want potential directors to avoid a play based on this.)
If you have a resume of your theatre experience, please bring it along.
