Avery Sutton returns to his wealthy family’s home after 8 years abroad, accompanied by his new girlfriend Gillian, who is excited to become part of the family. But the Suttons are even wackier and more outrageous than Avery remembers. His confused mother Evelyn seems happy but very out of touch; Aunt Esther blends exquisite homemaking with a shocking side-hustle; Nana is far more than Avery expects; and his father Stanford is hiding a big secret. Antics ensue as Avery tries to make sense of the layers of mix-ups, let Gillian in on his biggest secret, and find a place for both of them amid his family’s weird and kooky ways, while saving them from themselves.
PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTE ON THE CHARACTERS
The Suttons despite their somewhat lack of sanity are basically the SWEETEST people you will ever meet. Even when they say or do the most outrageous things, they do so with absolutely innocence and sincerity. None of these people would ever hurt a fly. At least not on purpose. (Maybe Nana) They are LIGHT and GRACIOUS and LOVING. They are CHINTZ and LACE and MARTHA STEWART. Underneath this is where the craziness lies.
6 ACTORS IN TOTAL
Avery Sutton (30s, M) Bright, likeable, nerdy. Prodigal son returning home after several years away living off a trust fund. He is the ‘straight man’ to his family’s wild antics.
Gillian Moore (20s, F) Avery’s fiancé, beautiful but with an edge – rhinestone wanting to be a diamond. Has a somewhat affected manner. Thrilled to be with Avery, and invested in becoming part of his family. From Hoboken, NJ.
Evelyn Sutton (50s, F) Lovely, gracious, somewhat oblivious. Beautiful, the picture of grace and decorum. Has a deep hidden sadness behind her carefully constructed, elegant facade.
Aunt Ester (40s, F) Ultimate homemaker, sweet, surprisingly insightful. Every bit as elegant and lovely as Evelyn, and far more connected to reality. Makes even the crassest dialogue classy.
Nana (Ancient, F – OPEN CASTING – ANY AGE OR GENDER) – looks elegant as her daughters, but at least twice their age and every minute is written on her face and body. She is half deaf, half blind, sour and potty-mouthed. A hunched-over little woman, walks slowly with the aid of a wheeled walker.
Stanford P Sutton (late 50s/60s, M) The family patriarch who shares a degree of Esther’s obliviousness. Great warmth and dignity, vibrant and good looking. His patrician bonhomie hides a secret, which he stoically protects to avoid harming his beloved family.
