Play Synopsis

Rabbit Hole explores a couple and their extended family trying to cope with the unfathomable loss of their four-year old son. While eight months have passed, navigating the grieving process is no easy feat. Family dynamics and personalities diverge, revealing that despite the unimaginable tragedy, they still need to live and laugh as they learn to exist in a new reality.
NOTE: All characters must be played with honesty. Despite the overwhelmingly tragic situation that the story presents, the play is not a melodrama.

Roles

Becca Corbett: Wife of Howie. Late 30’s – early 40’s Becca’s outward strength and coping mechanisms in the face of tragedy, reveal a woman who thrives on order and routine, appearing rational and in control. Throughout the course of the play, her underlying emotions and vulnerability are exposed.

Howie Corbett: Husband of Becca. Late 30’s – early 40’s Howie, intent on keeping the memory of his late son, Danny, alive, is open, expressive and wears his heart on his sleeve. It is difficult for him to understand Becca’s grief journey which differs from that of his own. Things cannot go back to what they were; perhaps he wishes they could.

Nat: Becca’s and Izzy’s mother. Mid 60’s Nat, having experienced the loss of her own son, is intent on giving advice, sometimes unintentionally, getting under Becca’s skin. She is funny and outspoken; she emanates a kind of joie de vivre, yet her empathy is unmistakable.

Izzy: Becca’s younger sister. Early 30’s Izzy is the antithesis of Becca: seemingly irresponsible, vocal, and feisty, Izzy’s candid presence provides humour. Her unexpected pregnancy announcement provides key subtext in the play.

Jason: 17 year old male. Jason, while not guilty of Danny’s death, is intent on meeting Becca and Howie to experience some measure of closure. He writes a short story in Danny’s memory. He is a straightforward, yet sensitive young man.

Voice of Danny: A four-year old boy whose voice is heard on a family VHS video that his dad, Howie, watches. The young actor would be required to attend one or two rehearsals at Curtain Club to have the lines recorded with the actor playing Howie.

Auditions

  • By appointment at the theatre – 400 Newkirk Road, Richmond Hill
  • Book an appointment for:
    • Thursday, September 10 7-10pm,
    • OR Saturday, September 12 1:00-5:00 pm
  • Call back date (if needed) – Sunday, Sep 13 10am

Audition Requirements

  • Please read the play before auditioning. Be familiar with the play.  There will be readings from the script, which will be emailed to you in advance of the audition.
  • Auditions are to be booked in advance through Emily Merigioli at emilypm@rogers.com , actors will be booked for a 15 min audition.
  • Scripts are available from Emily Merigioli at emilypm@rogers.com.
  • There is a deposit of $20 which is returned at the audition with the script being in good condition.

Rehearsals

  • There will be an initial Meet & Greet with a read-through in last week of October.
  •  Rehearsal schedule will be set after casting; generally, 2 nights a week and Sundays.  Regular rehearsals will begin on November 1.
  • Mandatory tech rehearsals for ALL cast and crew during the two weeks prior to opening.
