The perfect man. The perfect romance. Karin Maynard is on vacation when she meets the handsome and attentive Markus Richter. But back home in Cold War Germany, things are not so simple…
This play is based on a real program in the Cold War, when West German secretaries were targeted by East German state security and psychologically profiled to determine their perfect man.
This play is a mix of genres: part-romantic comedy, part-espionage thriller, with a significant shift in tone between Act 1 and Act 2.
Act 1 is heightened and dreamy.
Act 2 is solid and industrial.
All three actors will need to reflect this transition in their performances.
No accents are used in the play.
Actors will need to be comfortable with some intimacy.
ROLES:
Karin – A woman in her 30s. Described as “little miss serious, little miss mouse”, she says she doesn’t believe in fairy tales, but she has an idealistic and romantic streak, with a subtle, sometimes biting sense of humour.
Markus – A man in his 30s or early 40s. Handsome, presents as charming and nonthreatening. Dedicated to his beliefs, he is a talented manipulator of other people, but he is also not as detached as believes himself to be.
Lena – A woman in her 20s. Good-looking with a sexy and sophisticated style, her intelligence is frequently underestimated, but she is also not as self-assured as she presents.
