Sergio Calderon is directing the next play at the Curtain Club Theatre in Richmond Hill. Mending Fencesby Canadian playwright, Norm Foster, is a poignant comedy about a father and his estranged son struggling to find each other again. It is Sergio’s first directing job for the club and it has been inspiring for club members to learn from this talented artist.
Sergio was born in Mexico but after the terrible and devastating earthquake in Mexico City in 1985, the family knew it was time to emigrate to Canada. They settled first in Scarborough and later in Aurora where Sergio spent most of his childhood and teen years graduating from Cardinal Carter Catholic High School. He went on to Humber College to become a paramedic and has continued working in that field in York Region since 1998.
However, Sergio’s lifelong interest has been the arts, specifically theatre. As a child and older brother to his three sisters, he was constantly directing them to re-create his favourite moments from some movie or play he had just seen. This love of direction took him to Ryerson University where he graduated with a second degree, this time in theatre, in 2005.
Since then, Sergio has honed his directing skills at various theatre companies in the GTA, including Scarborough Music Theatre, Encore and Marquee Entertainment. He considers Theatre Aurora his “home” theatre and has directed several plays and musicals for this company, but specifically is proudest of his production of The Laramie Project in 2012. Next year he will be directing Blood Relations by Canadian playwright Sharon Pollock at Aurora. This past year he has been freelancing and decided to apply to The Curtain Club because he knew of its reputation for quality production work and supportive environment. He says Mending Fences has been a really great experience and also a challenge to direct, working with his talented cast to find the balance between the comedy and the serious subject matter of the play.
Mending Fences opens at The Curtain Club on March 29 and continues to April 13. Tickets are available at www.thecurtainclub.org or call the box office 905-773-3434.
